The Supervisory Council of RUSNANO has given a green light to financing a project titled A New Generation of High-Powered, High-Performance Sources of Laser Coherent Radiation. The project aims at organizing production of powerful, highly effective diode lasers and laser amplifiers of a new type—using the outflow radiation in an optical resonator.
Lasers produced with this new technology differ radically from diode lasers in which the outflow radiation is reduced to virtually insignificant levels. In the new lasers, the opposite occurs: the level of outflow radiation from the active layer to the layer of outflow is held at a high level by selecting the appropriate structure and thickness of the layers of gallium arsenide heterostructures. As a result, single mode diode lasers that emit in a wavelength range of 808 nm to 1,064 nm can achieve radiation strength of .8 W to 1.2 W in constant regime. The strength of radiation for multimode lasers in the same wavelength is 12 W to 20 W, exceeding the best domestic and foreign analogs.
In the second phase of the project, the project company will develop and organize the production of laser amplifiers. These are new-generation, highly effective integral sources of laser emission that work with new technology and achieve laser radiation strength of 10 W to 1,000 W. Analogs to this design do not exist, not in Russia and not in the rest of the world.
Customers for single mode lasers will come from telecommunications, companies engaged in precision work, medicine, and other sectors. The budget for the project has been set at 2.150 billion rubles. RUSNANO will contribute 765 million rubles to owners’ equity of the new company. The remainder of the financing will come from attracting coinvestors.
Sales of the project company in 2011 are forecasted at 356 million rubles. In 2015, using a pessimistic scenario, sales will exceed 5.5 billion rubles; the share of the project company in the global market for diode lasers will outstrip 30 percent.
In 2008 the global market for lasers reached $7.1 billion. Analysts predict that after a correction in 2009, the annual rate of growth in this market will average seven percent in 2009–2015.
